Hang The DJ sees a move away from the Amen break mashups towards a darker, more cut-up gabber sound. That's not to say that the post-junglist sounds of previous albums Killababylonkutz and Full English Breakfest (both released on Planet Mu) have been neglected; Shitmat has just broadened the spectrum of his samples to include even more of a pop influence. With inspiration as diverse as Whigfield, Thomas the Tank Engine and the Happy Hardcore scene, Hang The DJ's intention may well be not only to kill pop music, but to kill the mashup scene before it engulfs itself.
So whether you see it as the year's most intense party record, or a comment on the sorry state of popular music, Hang The DJ is essential listening. The American release of this record was cancelled due to sample 'clearance issues', so here it is available for the first time in the UK - get yours while you can.
